From the Editor…
UP FRONT: A Porsche is a great means of escape, both figuratively and literally. Here’s to plenty of Porsche adventures in 2020
Damn it, I’ve missed Christmas again. Not literally, because as I scribble this, it’s Dec 11, but by the time this issue hits the shops on Jan 2, it will have been and gone, which means I can’t wish 911&PW readers a merry one. Should have done it in the last issue, shouldn’t I? I can, though, wish 911&PW readers and all those in the wider Porsche community, a happy and fruitful New Year…
So, I guess, this is as good a time as any to look forward. Date spotters will note from the above intro that not only am I scribbling this before Xmas, but I’m also scribbling this the day before the General Election. This isn’t the place for political comment and who knows what Dec the 12th will bring – this page will already be at the printers – or whether it will still be rumbling on in early Jan, but there’s no doubt that the instability of the last couple of years has had an effect on the Porsche market. Good if you’ve been a buyer, but not so good for sellers and dealers. The classic bubble has burst, or at least stabilised.
Our enthusiasm for all ”things Porsche is rather more personal
From a Porsche perspective, we’re not far off the launch of the 992 Turbo and the GT cars, which is exciting, although like many I find it harder to be excited about the notion of the impending electric Porsche revolution and am feeling rather shortchanged by Porsche’s switch from LMP1 Le Mans to Formula E, even if the factory effort has scored a podium first time out. It’s still a 335bhp single seater, on road tyres…
Still, for most of us, the above doesn’t really have much bearing. Our enthusiasm for all things Porsche is rather more personal. It’s about what’s in the garage, or dreaming of what might be in the garage. It’s a means of escape from the drudgery, a welcome distraction, a great drive, a new project or just some light tinkering. Simple pleasures in a complicated (putting it politely) world and you can’t put a price on that. Here’s to a Porsche packed 2020.
